Wedding at South farm, a great story and superb work

I first met Bart when working on a fabulous wedding together at South farm last summer. Our couple was fun, colourful and full of personality, and the whole wedding reflected this! They had chosen me as their wedding florist which is always such an honour to be part of couples special day. I knew this wedding, in particular, was going to be a beautiful one to be involved with, and the flowers truly reflected this too! I and Bart continued to keep in touch as he captured the most amazing images of the day and of the flowers that filled every part of this wedding!

I kindly agreed to write a few hints and tips for couples currently in their wedding planning stages, and in particular a focus on flowers of course! So here you go, ultimate wedding flower tips from me!

A quick overview of hints and tips

  • Start researching florists you like around 18months to a year in advance of your wedding date
  • Choose a florist that you feel suits your style and that you like, you are going to be communicating and planning together!
  • Take a look at their website or social media platforms especially Instagram
  • Book in for a consultation
  • Look at Seasonal flowers for the month you are getting married
  • Gather ideas on a mood board keeping consistency at the forefront
  • Decide what you want to spend on your flowers but
  • Most importantly do not underestimate the budget you will need for your flowers, they will account for around 10% of your overall budget

Wedding flower budget

Your wedding flowers play a huge part in creating the overall feel and atmosphere of your day, that’s why it is important to not underestimate the floral items you will need and what you need to budget for them. Of course, it is ultimately down to you what you decide you would like to spend on your flowers but to give you a rough idea you should budget around 10% of your overall wedding budget on them.

When to look for a wedding florist

So when should you contact a florist? There are a few things to have in place before contacting a florist. Firstly and most importantly you should have your wedding date booked with your venue, marquee, tipi or barn first. Your florist can then check that they are available on your chosen wedding date and can also know what space they are working with and dressing with flowers.

Where to look for the best wedding florists

I have recently found that 80% of my couples find me on Instagram, probably because the social media platform is extremely visual which is perfect for a florist to showcase the style of work they produce. So just like picking your photographer, I would advise looking through their images to get a feel for the type of work they do. I always advise getting in touch with a florist around 18 months prior to your wedding date but no sooner than this as flowers are hard to price so far in advance and your ideas sometimes change too. A year in advance is also fine, but the closer to your date the higher risk of your florist already being booked upon your chosen date.

What should I expect

So you have followed your florist on Instagram, seen them at a wedding show, check out their website or even been recommended by one of your other suppliers or a friend. The next step is to get in touch with them! Most florists will offer a free consultation, I know I certainly do and this is usually done via video call. If your more local to me then I sometimes invite couples to my workshop too. In your consultation, we will discuss ideas, look at images of flowers you like, discuss options for the various places at your venue to dress and look at all the other elements of your wedding so that everything can tye together including bridesmaid dress colours, the style of wedding dress and your stationery.

Best wedding flowers for me

Choosing the flowers you want for your wedding can be a daunting thing but my main tips would be to start off with creating a mood board. A good app for this is Pinterest. Consistency is key, if you find you are collecting imagery that is similar to each other then that is the right direction to go with it all and what you most obviously like. Seasonality is a big big part of choosing flowers too, so try to choose things in season. Your florist can help you with this so do not worry, also if you end up like a flower that is out of season your florist should be able to show you some alternatives.

Wedding decorations trend 2020/2021

What’s hot right now? A big emphasis on everything green and relaxed is what I am finding is really in right now, but do not underestimate that using more foliage is cheaper, it can be just an expensive as flowers! Hanging feature pieces, I am finding that my couples are choosing a large key floral arrangement to dress their spaces. Be it a hanging chandelier, planks or hanging low-level greenery.

I hope you like my wedding flower tips and If you would like to chat through ideas then I would love to hear from you, now taking bookings for 2022. Look forward to hearing from you
